Championing disability representation in work and life
Meet Barry, a proud NDIS participant who is proving every day that people living with a disability can make meaningful contributions at work and within their community.
Barry has many passions: Holdens, Peter Brock, gardening, and connecting on Facebook Marketplace, but what he values most is his job at ABC Brisbane, where he’s been a dedicated team member for over nine years.
“We have jobs, are in relationships, have families, hang out with our friends and contribute to our community,” Barry shares, highlighting the importance of inclusion for people living with a disability.
Building belonging at work
Working three days a week at ABC South Bank in the Property Department, Barry ensures everything runs smoothly – from keeping things tidy to making sure staff have what they need. His role has even led to memorable moments, such as meeting singer Kate Ceberano and proudly handing her an ABC bag.
Despite challenges during COVID-19, Barry’s passion for his work never wavered. Returning to the office has reignited his sense of purpose: “I absolutely love my job. It’s so good to be back.”
Giving back to the community
Before his ABC role, Barry gained experience with Meals on Wheels, where he discovered the joy of helping others. Today, through ABC fundraising initiatives, he continues to support the organisation that brings meals , and companionship to older Australians.
“Meals on Wheels is so important. I get to take people meals and make sure they’re not lonely. We need to look after each other.”
Living well with support
As a proud member of Five Good Friends for over three years, Barry has set personal goals around health, cooking, and fitness. With support from his Helpers, he’s learned to prepare healthier meals, use his BBQ, and even cooked dinner for his parents.
His townhouse showcases his love for gardening, from herbs and vegetables to a growing pineapple plant. His Helpers have also introduced him to composting and local park visits, expanding his connection with nature.
Thriving with Five Good Friends
Barry’s journey reflects the power of NDIS supports in enabling independence, inclusion, and personal growth. With his trademark grin, Barry sums it up simply:
“Five Good Friends is really great.”
