Celebrating Aged Care Employee Day

How we can thank our aged care Helpers

Did you know this Sunday 7th August is Aged Care Employee Day? It’s a day to celebrate and thank our amazing aged care workers for the invaluable work they do for the community.

Here we explain how Aged Care Employee Day came about and how we can thank our aged care Helpers.

What’s the history of Aged Care Employee Day?

You may not have heard of Aged Care Employee Day, as it’s fairly new. It was created in 2018 by residential care provider Whiddon. They recognised that although there are appreciation days like International Nurses Day, that covers only a small percentage of people working in aged care.

There are so many people who work in aged care who deserve our appreciation. People like our Five Good Friends Helpers who provide personal care, companionship, transport, meal help, and so many other services for our older Members.

We all know that it’s our beautiful Helpers who help our Members live longer in their own homes. It’s their hard work and passion to put others’ needs before their own that make a difference in our community.

Why we need to thank our home care workers

Unfortunately, like many industries, home care is suffering from a serious staff shortage. There are long wait times to get a Home Care Package and part of that is because there isn’t enough staff to support the many Australians who need help in their homes.

At Five Good Friends, we do our best to make sure our Helpers feel supported, nurtured and engaged all year round. Our dedicated Helper team is always there to assist them so they can focus on what matters most – caring for our Five Good Friends Members. We want to provide a platform Helpers love, is easy to join and acts as a gateway to a fantastic network of Members and fellow Helpers.

Our Helper team is growing rapidly because we provide a platform that is easy to join and acts a a gateway to a fantastic network of Members and fellow Helpers. Through our Helper Hub, we have several courses so our Helpers can upskill and provide better care.

We want to thank our Helpers for always providing the best care to our Members.

How you can thank aged care and home care workers

We believe as a society, we should all thank the amazing employees of aged care. If you have someone in your life who works in aged care, make sure you acknowledge the work they do with a simple thank you.

It’s important to thank our home care workers too. Did you know that a study found every hour of home care service that an older person receives each week is associated with a 6% lower risk of them entering residential care?

People who use a higher level of social support services like one-on-one companionship visits at home, assistance to attend community-based social events, in combination with domestic assistance and transport services, stayed in their homes for longer. It’s our Helpers who make this possible.

You could thank your loved one’s Helper the next time you see them or contact them on the Lookout app. It’s our beautiful Helpers who help our Members live longer in their own homes. It’s their hard work and passion to put others’ needs before their own that make a difference in our community.

Let a Helper know when they've done a great job by rewarding them with a recommendation. You can now recommend a Helper for services they excel at or skills and traits you'd like to commend them for.

On behalf of Five Good Friends, we say #thanksforcaring.
